A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure, a vol enclosing an increscent Argent, overall in base a fox's mask Tenn. Below the shield a Black scroll doubled Silver and inscribed in base "READY TO STRIKE" in Silver letters.
Ultramarine blue and golden orange are the colors traditionally associated with U.S. Army Aviation. The wings symbolize flight and mobility. The increscent moon is adapted from the South Carolina state flag and is symbolic of its heritage and traditions dating back to the Revolutionary War. The fox's mask is an allusion to the legendary South Carolina militia leader, Francis Marion, "The Swamp Fox," and typifies speed, cunning and attack capabilities. Black and white (silver) emphasize the night and day total preparedness of the unit.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 27 February 1989.
